From Fineen in Port Vila, Vanuatu
All 19 Lattitude volunteers have been safely evacuated from Ambae and Pentecost, and are now in Vila. We are all physically alright, but we will be struggling mentally with the consequences of our experiences for a while.
Cyclone Pam. Top wind speeds of 430 km/h. Total devastation. I am very lucky that Pentecost escaped the worst of it. My village, Atabuao, will never be the same. As with the majority of the villages on Pentecost, the gardens- the main food source- were decimated. In a matter of a couple weeks, there will be food shortages. Compared to other places such as Vila and Tanna, that is minor damage.
There are a multitude of organizations and military personnel here: AUS military, NZ military, Japanese disaster relief forces, AUSMAT, UNICEF, Save the Children, World Vision, the UN, and many others.
It is my intention to find volunteer work here in Vila to help with the disaster relief efforts on Efate. In the bigger picture, food, fuel, water and medical supplies are being sent to the other islands, such as Tanna and Pentecost. This is where you guys come in. I encourage you to donate to a tremendously worthy cause. These people have given me so much, and I owe them a debt that I will never be able to repay.
Thank you for your well wishes, I hope to be able to keep you updated on my status here in Vila.
Fineen has now chosen a relief effort that she was hoping the Ruddy and our customers would support in Vanuatu.
It involves the construction of a new house for Terry, the Lattitudes Program Coordinator in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Terry’s family home was destroyed in the cyclone, and he and his (pregnant) wife and two young children have been living in temporary housing ever since. We will update you on the family and the name of the organization which will help to build them a new 2-bedroom cyclone-proof concrete house.
ADD A TOONIE OR FIVE OR TEN DOLLARS TO YOUR PURCHASE AND WE WILL MAKE SURE THE MONEY GETS TO FINEEN’S PROJECT IN PORT VILLA
