Cheap Eats – How to reduce the family food budget
With the economy in crisis many people are looking for ways to save money, cutting the family’s budget is a good way to start; it’s the second largest monthly expense after housing and energy. By getting back to basics, we not only shave off dollars from our expenditure we can also increase the vitamins and nutrients we are putting into our bodies, feeling the benefit of saving dollars in our pocket book and feeling healthier, both in mind and body.
Take a break from meat
If you’re looking to save money, try eating meat less often, taking the vegetarian option and buying fruit and vegetables that are in season. Buy only the quantities you require for a recipe, so you don’t spend your hard earned money on vegetables that will eventually end up in the compost bin, unless you can add those vegetables to a soup or stew when they start to wilt. Another option is to buy larger quantities of seasonal fruit and vegetables and freeze them for use throughout the year, you can save money as well as benefit from a variety of tastes and flavours, no matter what the season.
Whole foods Rule!
Reduce your purchases of processed foods; by buying foods that have not been subjected to any type of process and are fresh from the ground, you can save a bundle! But if you really like the flavour of a particular brand try adding more vegetables and beans to make the most of your favourite sauces. Tasty Bites or ViJ’s curries have an ample amount of sauce, so that you can add vegetables or meat, expanding the serving size
Check out the Bulk Section.
No packaging and plenty of savings to be had. Whether you’re making your own granola from steel cut oats, or creating a tasty snack from almonds and raisins, shopping from the bulk section will reduce your grocery bill. If you really have an eye on saving money, try soaking your own beans instead of buying cans of beans, you’ll notice the difference in flavour and the price.
Start a “What would you like to eat” conversation around the kitchen table
Involve the whole family, most kids like to be involved in decisions that will affect them, so start the dialogue and get the recipe book out. Looking at a beautifully illustrated cookery book will bring out the cook in everyone. Make a shopping list from your chosen recipe and before you know it you’ll have tomorrows meal planned and ideas for the rest of the week, with everyone offering to help. From this starting point you can find out what’s in season and create your own dishes, as your experience and confidence in cooking grows.
Don’t feel like cooking?
There are always those days when you just haven’t got the energy to cook. For those days pick up a freshly prepared entrée, instead of heading for a restaurant or a fast food outlet. You’ll be saving money and the nutritional content of your meal will be better for your body and your pocket book. At the Ruddy Potato we always use fresh ingredients, letting you have the benefit of a home cooked meal without the cooking.
Food To Go
Whether you have a meeting in town or are heading out for a day with the kids, pack a lunch to go, with snacks for the ferry. You can save yourself dollars. Get into the habit of packing a bag of nuts and raisins to stave off food cravings, take a tea bag on the ferry for your morning cuppa or afternoon tea, or a flask for your mid morning coffee, packing a couple of home made cookies for a treat. No time for breakfast, pop a pouch of quick oatmeal into your bag, it will keep those hunger pangs at bay until lunchtime. Lunches To Go
