Enjoying your first cup of coffee is one of many peoples' loves in life, but many people have a little nagging question in their minds as to whether this morning ritual is harming their bodies in the long term. The increasing presence of caffeine in our lives raises the question of how much is too much.

Caffeine is a natural ingredient found in the leaves, seeds or fruit of a number of plants, including coffee, tea, cocoa, and yerba maté. It is also manufactured and used as a food additive in some carbonated drinks, and as an ingredient in certain drug products, such as cold and headache remedies.

It is difficult to link precise intake levels of caffeine to specific health effects because tolerance to caffeine differs widely from person to person. For healthy adults, a small amount of caffeine may have positive effects, such as increased alertness or ability to concentrate.

Health Canada scientists recently reviewed these studies and found that:
• The general population of healthy adults is not at risk for potential adverse effects from caffeine if they limit their caffeine intake to 400mg per day – three cups a day;
• People who get an adequate daily amount of calcium have greater protection against the possible adverse effects of caffeine on bone health. For most people, choosing foods according to Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating can provide the calcium needed for good health;
• Compared to the general adult population, children are at increased risk for possible behavioural effects from caffeine;
• Women of childbearing age are at increased risk of possible reproductive effects.

So now we have established that your morning ritual is not harming your body the question is which coffee?

Can your choice of morning coffee impact the environment and infuence global enonomics?

The development of Fair Trade came out of an urgent need to help small-scale farmers earn a decent living for their efforts. It works in two ways. One, it sets a guaranteed minimum price for the coffee. And two, it helps eliminate the middlemen by dealing more directly with farmer-owned co-operatives. Small farmers traditionally pass on sustainable farming practices to their children. They are the best stewards of the land, with the highest interest in living in and passing on land with healthy soil, free from pesticides.

To help you navigate the choices of coffee here’s the low down on the coffee we stock:

Kicking Horse Coffee Small in stature but big on flavour, Kicking Horse Coffee is nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies and at the headwaters of the mighty Columbia River. Some people say it is the Rocky Mountain air, some people suggest it is the altitude. Traditionally roasted and blended at 3,000 feet above sea level, quality is generally better when plants are grown at higher altitudes – probably because coffee originated at high altitude in East Africa. And Kicking Horse likes to think that processing at similar altitudes gives Kicking Horse coffee greater authenticity of taste.

Salt Spring Coffee exists for one reason: to make truly exceptional coffee. This means an exceptional fresh-roasted taste backed up by exceptionally solid values. From the experienced hands of the co-op farmers who tend the beans, to the talented hands of our roasting room crew, to the knowledgeable hands who make sure it gets to you as fresh as can be, there are an awful lot of hands working toward just one thing – the best cup of sustainably created coffee. www.saltspringcoffee.com

Level Ground take care to ensure that theirr customers receive the best quality premium Arabica beans. Prior to leaving port and upon arrival at their facility, their Fair Trade Coffees undergo quality control inspection and cupping tests. The coffee beans are then roasted in small batches, packaged and shipped promptly to ensure you receive the best quality coffee. www.levelground.com

Ethical Bean Coffee Company understands the importance of buying 100% organic coffee. It's more than just finding a better coffee. It's about finding coffee that is sensitive to the long-term health of the environment. What makes a coffee organic? Organic coffee avoids the harmful chemicals, like DDT and other pesticides, used by the majority of coffee producers. To be certified organic, a farmer must guarantee that chemicals aren't added to the growing and processing of coffee for a minimum of three years. They must also ensure that how they grow their coffee promotes the long-term health of the environment and the soil. And they must adhere to a soil-building process, ensuring the environmental sustainability of their operation. www.ethicalbean.com

We have two other great local coffees: Roasted on Bowen Island underneath the Ruddy Potato, Bowen Island Roasting Co provides The Ruddy with a Bowen flavour, and just across the water on the Sunshine Coast is Strait Coffees (www.straitcoffee.ca) which provides us with bulk coffee, so you can have as little or as much as you want. Both these companies are in keeping with The Ruddy Potato’s policy of only stocking organic and fair trade coffee.
