What's The Ruddy Doing about...Recycling

Ocean Wise
The Ruddy is part of the Ocean Wise program, run by the Vancouver Aquarium. Look for the Ocean Wise symbol on The Ruddy Potato’s Fish products.

How does the program work?
The Vancouver Aquarium does the research using the latest scientific information, and recommends seafood choices that are part of a sustainable fishery.

What makes a seafood option Sustainable?
Ocean Wise chooses fish and seafood that are
• Abundant and resilient to fishing pressures
• Managed as part of a comprehensive plan based on current research
• Harvested in ways that limit accidental by catch of other, possibly endangered species
• Harvested in ways that limit damage to ocean habitat.

At The Ruddy we have partnered with the Ocean Wise program to ensure that the fish and seafood we provide is sustainable. We requested that our supplier submit a list of the fish and seafood we purchase to the Ocean Wise program. This list is then reviewed by the Ocean Wise researchers and then we engage in a dialogue: which items have the approval of the Ocean Wise program and which items need to be dropped, and the reasons for this decision. It is an on going discussion but through this review we hope to bring sustainable seafood choices to Bowen Island.
